Artificial Intelligence integration with the supply chain, making it green and sustainable

Chandra Prakash Gupta, Vikram Kumar, Anil Khurana · 2023

In the modern world, where ecological concerns and sustainability imperatives have become paramount, industries grapple with the challenge of aligning their practices with environmentally responsible objectives. The supply chain, a linchpin of global commerce, stands as a domain with immense potential for transformation. The paper is an attempt to find out how the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with supply chain management can both increase efficiency and move supply chains in the direction of a greener, more sustainable future. An extensive examination of the state of AI integration in supply chains is done. It assesses how AI-driven technologies are adopted and used and how they affect supply chain efficiency, operational efficiency, and logistical difficulties. The study examines AI’s potential to reduce supply chain networks’ environmental impact in a number of areas. It explores the accuracy of demand forecasting, resource utilization optimization, and energy-efficient transportation routing. All this is expected to limit waste, energy use, and carbon emissions, in addition to lowering operational expenses. Additionally, it aims to provide a thorough understanding of AI’s contribution to supply chains’ ‘greening’ as well as their ‘sustainable’ transformation. The study makes the case that the incorporation of AI has the potential to catapult supply chains into a period of unmatched economic viability and environmental conscience and is expected to provide useful insights for a supply chain management industry that is more environmentally friendly and sustainable in the future.
