Studying Variation in Sound

Raymond Hickey · 2023

Linguists generally make a distinction between countries where English is used as a second language, in the economy, technology, and science. English in such situations is technically known as “English as a second language” and “English as a foreign language” respectively. Phonetics is the level of language which is closest bound to personal identity. The term “accent” has a further meaning in phonetics: it can refer to the stress placed on syllable of a word or type of stress used by a language (volume, length, and/or pitch). Formal registers are often characterized by vocabulary choices, e.g. commence for begin, elevate for raise. It can also involve pronunciation, from a more careful pronunciation of one's words. Research into varieties of English today is closely associated with the research agenda known as “language variation and change,” which investigates the manner in which variation in language use leads to constant change.
