JuGaze: A Cell-based Eye Tracking and Logging Tool for Jupyter Notebooks
Sören Sparmann, Sven Hüsing, Carsten Schulte · 2023
Computational notebooks have gained significant traction in computer programming and data science courses worldwide. These notebooks are often touted for their pedagogical advantages over traditional programming environments. However, despite the growing enthusiasm surrounding their use, empirical evidence to support these claims remains limited. In this paper, we propose a novel tool for conducting eye-tracking experiments and logging user interactions in Jupyter notebooks. We introduce the concept of cell-based eye tracking to address the dynamic and interactive nature of computational notebooks. We showcase the capabilities of the tool by demonstrating its functionality and presenting data collected from a study on epistemic programming. Our aim is to contribute to educational research on computational notebooks and improve their design for the classroom.
