Insensitivity to Ordered Information and the Failure to Read
Martin H. Singer · 2024
Chapter 1 indicated that competent readers rely on orthographic knowledge (e.g., letter order, letter position 1 , and word shape) to resolve their uncertainty about words; stored information that pertains to the visual characteristics of a letter string permits competent readers to guess on the basis of partial information. It stands to reason that a failure to acquire orthographic information would eliminate an apparently effective reading strategy.
