Quantum computing forms an emerging technology with unique advantages, both in theoretical and practical considerations. For the practical aspects, several types of quantum computing devices exist today which may be general purpose or are optimized with respect to different properties, e.g., for solving optimization problems. This work explores the application of different quantum computing devices for deriving an optimal computed tomography data acquisition strategy. While solving the problem for a limited dataset size is possible on either device, the quantum annealing technology seems most promising for real-life applications, both in terms of the quality of the results as well as considering scaling issues. We use several examples to demonstrate the use of quantum computers in the planning and optimization of the data acquisition in computed tomography.
