INFN-Cloud Solution for CYGNO Computational Model
2022
The CYGNO project aims to exploit the progress in commercial scientific Active Pixel Sensors (APS) based on CMOS technology to realize a large gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for Dark Matter search and Solar Neutrino studies. CYGNO, like many other astroparticle experiments around the world, can be defined as a medium-sized experiment. This type of experiments usually require a relatively small amount of computational resources with non-continuous use. For this reason, the high cost for dedicated computing infrastructure is often not justified; it’s a typical case that can exploit and benefit from the resources of a cloud infrastructure. In order to provide a solution to the many astroparticle experiments that rely on the INFN infrastructure, INFN developed a container-based system implementing seamless integration between storage and computing systems. The latter is based on JupyterHub and offers a multi-user platform for accessing the experiment environment (ROOT, GEANT, GARFIELD++, libraries, etc). A Platform as a Service (PaaS) was created inside INFN Cloud that allows the experiments to access resources as a Software as a Service (SaaS), and CYGNO is the beta-tester of this system. The talk will detail the overall project and preliminary user experiences.
