Internet Of Things: Sensor Layer Security Risk Mitigation Framework

Tapiwa Gundu · 2023

The growth of fourth industrial revolution technologies has been driven by the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), which encompasses devices ranging from personal gadgets to large industrial machines. Through IoT, devices can be connected to the physical world around them, providing a significant increase in connectivity. However, this heightened connectivity has also piqued the interest of attackers who are always on the lookout for vulnerabilities to exploit. Sensor vulnerabilities are one of the most significant threats to IoT devices, primarily due to their limited computing power and the lack of proper security procedures to control sensor usage. Attackers can exploit sensors, such as the camera, accelerometer, moisture sensor, gyroscope, microphone, temperature sensor, light sensor, among others, to extract data or execute malicious code on the IoT device. In this study the various risks and vulnerabilities targeting IoT devices are examined, particularly in relation to sensor misuse, and propose a framework to mitigate sensor-based threats. The effectiveness of the proposed framework was validated through an expert review exercise.
