SIGHT BEYOND VISION (SBV) WALKING STICK FOR BLIND PEOPLE: OBJECT DETECTION, CURRENCY RECOGNITION AND LOCATION SHARING

International Research Journal of Modernization in Engineering Technology and Science · 2024

This research paper presents the design and implementation of a comprehensive assistive device aimed at enhancing the mobility and safety of visually impaired individuals. The proposed smart walking stick integrates cutting-edge technologies to address various challenges faced by the blind during navigation. An ultrasonic sensor is employed for real-time obstacle detection, providing audible alerts through a buzzer when obstructions are detected.Furthermore, the inclusion of a GPS/GSM-based messaging system enables users to seek assistance in emergency situations by sharing their location with friends and family. In dim or dark environments, a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) triggers LED illumination, aiding users in identifying individuals and obstacles.Additionally, the system incorporates a currency recognition module that utilizes a camera, image processing, and voice synthesis to identify and announce currency denominations, facilitating financial independence for the visually impaired. This multifaceted smart walking stick aims to empower individuals with visual impairments by offering a comprehensive solution for navigating both indoor and outdoor environments, thereby fostering increased independence and safety.
