Education Abstract: Optical Computing for AI Acceleration

Emerging AI applications such as large language models, vision transformers, graph convolutional networks, and other deep neural networks require massive computational resources. Contemporary electronic platforms are struggling to keep up with the demands of these emerging AI applications. In this paper, we discuss how optical computing can enable light-speed acceleration of AI workloads, and how cross-layer design can overcome the many challenges with it.
