Securing human lives is of utmost importance in modern society. To ensure security and safety, nowadays, video surveillance is used everywhere starting from private residences to banks, ATMs, railway stations, airports etc. Although these cameras are useful tool to deter criminal activity, they act as mere witnesses in the worst case. It becomes a tough job for security and police personnel to patrol on streets and monitor many CCTVs at the same time. Sometimes, due to human error, crimes may go unnoticed. At this backdrop, this paper proposes an easily implementable violence detection system that turns CCTVs into smart cameras. The proposed system uses optical flow to detect violence and attempts to improve accuracy in real-world scenarios. The system can be modified to alert operators that allows law enforcement personnel to approach the crime scene immediately and take necessary action.
