Manual notation systems

Adam Cullinane, G. J. Davies, Peter O'Donoghue · 2024

This chapter commences with an important explanation of why manual notation methods are still important, given the technology available to analysts today. This chapter describes three types of manual notation data collection; tally tables, sequential systems and scatter plots. Tally tables allow totals of events and event combinations to be recorded. Sequential systems record chronological sequences of events, outcomes, players involved, and possibly zones of the playing area. These systems can also be implemented in spreadsheet packages and the chapter gives guidance on setting up such spreadsheets. Scatter plots allow event details to be recorded on images of the playing surface providing useful tactical information. For each type of the system, this chapter covers the input of data, throughput and subsequent output of information.
