Automatic Measurement of Microservice Architecture Quality with Cohesion, Coupling, and Complexity Metrics

Alvin Wilta, Achmad Imam Kistijantoro · 2023

Microservice architecture has gained popularity as a solution to overcome challenges associated with a monolithic architecture, providing benefits such as ease of large-scale development and scalability. However, the quality of microservices is still overlooked, with current measurements primarily focused on the migration phase from monolithic systems. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of microservices causes the quality of its architecture to fluctuate. Therefore, there is a need for an automated process to measure the quality of microservices during development and maintenance. Based on these issues, this paper proposes a tool named MicroQA that automates the measurement of microservice quality that perform static analysis and dynamic analysis on the system based on cohesion, coupling, and complexity metric with CI/CD integration. By comparing the values of each quality aspect, it is possible to determine the improvement or decline in quality during development.
