Key Terms and Contexts in Music, Sound, and Inquiry

Shara Brun · 2024

The first half of this chapter defines central terms and contextual frames having to do with sound and music. Differences between the two terms are discussed, as is a basic description of the mechanics of sound. Sonic imagination is explored as a primary somatic language that has been lingering in the shadows of academic inquiry. The second half of the chapter presents depth psychology as a foundational frame for inquiry using music and sound. It does this by providing a basis for understanding dynamics of the unconscious and Shadow (the excluded, repressed, or abject) in the context of listening and translation. It is argued that in both therapeutic and academic inquiry using sound and music, the inclusion of the terrains of the unconscious and Shadow is a matter of fidelity in knowledge as well as ethics.
