Research on Construction of Ship Propulsion Shafting Monitoring System

Yushi Wang, C Wang, Cheung‐Hwa Hsu, Jia‐Jang Wu · 2023

This research employed open-source software and hardware to precisely measure the oil temperature and level of the intermediate bearing of the propulsion shaft in the turbine engine room. The system included the DS18B20 temperature sensor and the Capacitive Liquid Level Sensor to detect the oil temperature and level, respectively. The analog signals obtained from these sensors were converted into digital signals. These digital signals were then used to develop a user-friendly monitoring panel (HMI) using Microsoft Visual Studio. This panel displayed the real-time status of the system and stored the data in Excel. In addition, alarms were set using electronic components, such as buzzers, to warn on-duty personnel of the status of the propulsion shaft and store real-time running data. This system effectively reduced the risk of propulsion shaft breakage or bearing damage caused by hull deformation. The system was inexpensive to set up using open-source software and hardware. Program parameters or sensor types were adjusted based on user requirements to enhance system flexibility in a user-friendly environment. This allowed for real-time information on equipment operation and early detection of equipment failure symptoms.
