Developing Elementary Federated Learning Algorithms Leveraging the ChatGPT

The Python Testbed for Federated Learning Algorithms is a simple Python FL framework easy to use by ML&AI developers who do not need to be professional programmers, and this paper shows that it is also amenable to emerging AI tools. In this paper, we successfully developed three elementary FL algorithms using the development process of transforming the given sequential code into the target FL code through the following three steps: (i) specify context comprising the sequential code, API description, and the function main, (ii) ask ChatGPT to complete server and clients’ callback functions, and (iii) verify the generated code. We conducted a series of experiments with the goal of creating minimal contexts based on the feedback from ChatGPT through its answers to a questionnaire given at the end of each experiment.
