Mean Squared Error Analysis of Least Squares Envelope Fitting DoA Estimator

Least squares envelope fitting is a straightforward method of direction of arrival estimation that can be used in systems that employ scanning, either mechanical or electronic, to estimate angle. However, when viewed as a maximum likelihood estimator, it becomes clear the approach is based on somewhat unrealistic assumptions regarding the distribution of observations. In this paper, the impact of data distribution on bias and variance of this estimator is studied using analytic approach. Computer simulation experiments, performed for Rice and Rayleigh distributions, confirm high accuracy of the proposed analytic approach.
