A Containerized Template Approach for Vendor-Friendly Smart Home Integration

Smart home devices are often only connectable with devices from the same vendor. Various interoperability platforms exist on the market to overcome this vendor lock-in. However, some vendors are reluctant to make the necessary software details of their devices publicly available, in part because of the risk of losing sovereignty over the source code used to interact with their devices. To mitigate this problem, we propose a template approach based on containerization and gRPC, where vendors can not only provide the software, but also define the execution environment that controls their devices. We showcase the approach successfully in a small case study.
