Violence is a pervasive and destructive force in society, causing physical and emotional harm to victims and their families. The impact of violence is not limited to individuals but also has broader social consequences, including increased healthcare costs, loss of productivity, and decreased quality of life. To address this problem, intelligent Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems have been developed to prevent violent incidents in public and private spaces. These systems use advanced technologies such as computer vision and machine learning to analyze human behavior and detect violent actions. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing automatic violence recognition systems that can accurately identify violent behavior in real time. These systems use a range of techniques, from traditional handcrafted methods to state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms, to analyze video footage and detect violent actions. This book chapter aims to provide a comprehensive review of violence recognition methods, including their strengths and limitations. In addition to discussing the technical aspects of violence recognition systems, this chapter also examines publicly available violent datasets that have been used for experiments and evaluations. These datasets are critical for training and testing violence recognition algorithms, and their availability has enabled researchers to make significant progress in this field. Finally, this chapter discusses the challenges that remain in developing effective violence recognition systems, including issues related to real-time inference, generalization ability, and the need for more diverse datasets. Future directions for research in this area are also presented, highlighting the potential for new technologies to enhance violence recognition capabilities.Overall, this book chapter provides a comprehensive overview of violence recognition methods and highlights the importance of continued research in this field to address the ongoing problem of violence in society.
