In recent years smart cities have been observed as the key factor for development. Due to the environmental and social change globally, smart cities are today’s need because smart cities involve waste management, intelligent transportation, smart banking, renewable energy production, heat and energy control, smart healthcare, and many other applications that improve the infrastructure of cities and life quality of citizens. Technology is needed to implement these applications of smart cities. Integration of IoT (internet of things) and AI (artificial intelligence) are much needed for the successful development of smart cities taking maximum benefit with the lowest risk. This chapter focuses on the need for integration of IoT in the development of smart cities, potential risks, and challenges in integrating IoT for smart cities development, and their possible solutions. Today human life is largely dependent on the internet and internet-based applications and hence on IoT. IoT makes it easy for humans to interact with devices. IoT makes devices smarter and more efficient. But IoT-enabled applications have to suffer from security risks. Security is the prime issue in smart cities. This chapter also puts light on the use of blockchain in IoT-enabled smart devices for better security. Since many applications of the smart city need the transfer of important and private information over the internet, hence the integration of blockchain in IoT can be a better solution for smart city development.
