Using the History of Technological Impact on Society in Education to Attract Girls to STEM in Africa

Michael N. Geselowitz, Kelly McKenna · 2023

There is currently a challenge of attracting young people, especially girls, into technical careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Quality pre-university education needs to be a part of efforts to take on the challenge, in order to fill the pipeline at an earlier phase. Studies have shown that girls have more interest in engineering when instruction emphasizes how technology impacts on societal evolution. The IEEE REACH Program supplies free, online, open educational resources than enable pre-university teachers to include the history of technology and its impact on society to be incorporated into classroom. This paper reports on the results of a pilot program sponsored jointly by IEEE and UNESCO to introduce the IEEE REACH Program into Uganda.
