The Internet of Things (IoT) is driving the growing demand for IoT devices or objects in the connected digital home to improve aspects such as energy efficiency management, comfort, perimeter security, care or telemedicine systems, and advanced multimedia services, among others. However, the large variety of alternatives, the difference between types of wireless networks, the lack of security and data privacy or the complexity of implementation make it difficult to design and build IoT objects that fit into existing IoT platforms on the market. This paper analyzes what aspects are necessary to carry out the construction and development of an IoT object that must guarantee, in addition to reliability, scalability and flexibility in configuration and deployment, security in terms of data transmission and reliability in terms of protection of the personal data processed. The steps of creating a simple IoT object consisting of a smart lock and its subsequent integration into the IoT ecosystem will be explained.
