Parentheses and Square Brackets

Abstract The word parentheses originally referred to words that were inserted into texts as examples, explanations, or asides. By the late sixteenth century, though, the term came to refer to the curved upright lines that were placed around those inserted words. The British call them round brackets or just brackets.
