Abstract This chapter builds on information retrieval research and corpus linguistics to address three technical considerations: How do we represent texts efficiently? How do we summarize the contents of a text? How do we retrieve a text based on its contents? The first step in our journey involves turning words into a structured dataset with useful numeric quantities.
