CoMMA Protocol: Towards Complete Mitigation of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) Attacks

Dev Churiwala, Bhaskar Krishnamachari · 2023

MEV attacks have been an omnipresent evil in the blockchain world, an implicit tax that uninformed users pay for using the service. The problem arises from the miners' ability to reorder and insert arbitrary transactions in the blocks they mine. This paper introduces a 2-phased transaction protocol designed to mitigate MEV attacks in blockchain systems. The proposed protocol involves users obtaining interaction tokens from on-chain counter-parties, which act as preemptive measures against transaction reordering. The effectiveness of the CoMMA protocol in preventing MEV attacks is demonstrated and validated.
