Brief Survey on Wireless Sensor Network Routing

Rati D. Joshi, Sameena Banu · 2023

WSNs are a subset of wireless networks designed to gather data from the environment. Military and civil engineering (such as environmental monitoring, healthcare, and catastrophe predictions) are only a few of the many possible uses for sensor-based systems. As a result, there are more problems with transmitting and receiving information due to the growing usage of WSNs. Due to the distinctive characteristics that set WSNs, routing in these networks is exceedingly complicated. Despite the introduction of several ad hoc routing protocols, none of them can be directly implemented with the resources and sensor networks that are now available. It is extremely difficult to build routing protocols for WSNs because of their unsupervised behavior, the nature of all data transmission, and the frequent topological changes in the network. A significant examination of 24 works on WSN routing is provided in this survey, which makes the researchers take respective decisions on enhanced routing strategy. This review analyses the adopted methods in 24 papers. Also, the analysis of several performance metrics is done. In addition, a comprehensive examination of the best achievements attained in each work is reviewed. Finally, the work ends with the identification of several research problems in this area.
