Innovations in transportation, and related technologies, as outlined in Chapter 3 drove economic growth in the US for quite some time. However, the dominance of this ecosystem was displaced by the mid-twentieth century by computers and communications. The seeds of this transformation have a rich history ( Isaacson, 2014 ), including Franklin and electricity in 1752 ( Isaacson, 2003 ), Bell and the telephone in 1876 ( Grosvenor & Wesson, 2016 ), and Edison and electric lighting in 1880 ( Jonnes, 2003 ). However, the market innovations in computers and communications emerged in the 1940s.
