Edge and Cloud Networking Operators

Kamel Haddadou, Guy Pujolle · 2023

Telecom operators were quickly interested in virtualization and cloud networking technologies to centralize applications and be able to control and maintain them easily. This chapter examines the impact of Edge and Cloud Networking on 5G technology and, more generally, on telecom operators. 5G architecture contains four main parts: the first part is the radio, that is, the transmission from a mobile device to the antenna. The second part is precisely the access network or RAN that connects the antenna to the core network of 5G. The third part is the core network (5GC), which is the network that connects the MEC data centers together to enable communication between 5G antennas and to transport a user's data from an entry point to a potentially very distant exit point. Finally, the last part is services. An Ethernet infrastructure is used to transport the IP packets generated in the terminal equipment and encapsulated in an Ethernet frame.
