Complexity or Complexities of Information

Jean‐Pierre Briffaut, Philippe Kourilsky · 2023

The sciences of complexity related to information processing were born in the context of the first large computerized systems of the 1950s, and more particularly, from the development of the first computers. Since then, the problem of complexity has spread almost everywhere, in the spheres of biology and in the human sciences, such as economics and/or business management, each with its own specificities. The nominal system, given hazards and “noise”, must be monitored by an ad hoc surveillance system, and each implements both computational energy and transversal energy. This chapter presents four notions, or aspects, correlated in complexity, namely, complex, complicated, uncertainty and ignorance, often associated with ordinary complexity to characterize the approximate side of any modeling. Robustness is a primary datum of the architecture, a constructed property and a fundamental aspect of complexity that brings out its relative and conventional side according to the mission.
