LEARNING TO CODE – INVESTIGATING THE ADOPTION OF VIDEO-BASED LAB SOLUTIONS FOR UNIVERSITY-LEVEL NOVICE PROGRAMMERS

Aidan McGowan, Neil J. Anderson, Giuseppe Trombino, Paul Sage, Janak Adhikari, Leo Galway · ICERI proceedings · 2023

This paper explores the integration of video-based solutions in university programming module labs as an alternative to traditional methods. While lectures, tutorials, and practical lab sessions are common, technology-enhanced approaches are gaining popularity. Lab sessions offer hands-on experience, but drawbacks include limited availability, pace mismatch, and feedback time. Various methods exist for providing lab solutions, such as in-class demonstrations, annotated code, or step-by-step guides. Video-based solutions offer two formats: static code walk-throughs and build-up demonstrations. These formats offer benefits like visual and audio explanations, demonstrative learning of coding practices, and flexible, self-paced access. Challenges include production quality, accessibility, and catering to diverse preferences. The paper aims to investigate and report on the use of video solutions for lab exercises, reviewing theoretical frameworks, current practices, and attitudes of students and lecturers. This study is part of a longitudinal exploration of video-based lab solutions' impact on novice programming students at the university level.
