Jessica K. Barfield · Edward Elgar Publishing eBooks · 2023

Communication technologies equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) are proliferating throughout society and communicating with individuals in the role of teacher, companion, service employee, medical assistant, caregiver, and others. Considering the communication ability and increasing intelligence of technologies that interact with people, this chapter reviews current literature on the extent to which individuals might disclose personal, sensitive, and potentially embarrassing information to AI-enabled technology. In addition, given recent advances in developing autonomous and humanoid appearing robots, the chapter discusses the extent to which people may disclose personal and potentially embarrassing information to robots that are gaining in intelligence and social skills. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the design and use of AI-enabled devices to enhance the communication process and exchange of information between individuals and emerging AI technologies.
