Raising information awareness

Paul W.M. Cuypers · 2023

The first of four strategies to counter project uncertainty is to raise information awareness. Inattentional blindness is a side effect of our ability to focus. Our senses process constant impressions, but you sometimes need to shut things out and concentrate on a single matter to get things done. There is a flip side to narrowing one&s;s focus, project teams can experience reduced awareness or ‘information blindness,&s; sometimes caused by a strong focus on tasks absorbing all their attention. The good news is that most people receiving an advanced warning pick essential other information while completing a demanding mental task ( Chabris and Simons, 2010 ). This research finding is the foundation of Power Kanban. Power Kanban works in two ways, first it tricks the mind to help spotting essential information. Second, using smart linking of board items unknown-known information is made available. By pre-defining critical information, you can dramatically improve the chances of picking up relevant information as the project unfolds. Creating a project meta-data model acts as a pre-warning. While focusing on the necessary tasks to make the project successful, you keep an eye on emerging relevant information. Using Kanban boards like JIRAand smart linking, information can be shared across teams.
