Maximizing information availability
Paul W.M. Cuypers · 2023
The second strategy to master uncertainty is to increase information availability. A known-unknown is information you know you want to know but do not have. In this chapter, we will divide the known-unknown information into distinct categories and systematically use calculations, simulations, and models to create a hypothesis that can be tested to reduce uncertainty. Rather than making presumptions, assumptions, or guesses, working hypotheses can be developed using various models that provide answers to generic questions applicable to any project. In this chapter, we will look at the following techniques: Ikigai, the four-phase model, core capability, project master planning, SPOC, capability/value grid, the Diamond of Innovation, CYNEFIN, Project Footprint, VUCA, earned value, stage gate transition, and strategic governance decisions.
