Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks is one of the hazardous cyber threats affecting top-notch companies of the world. Attackers are strengthening this attack by making a large bot army, including IoT (Internet of Things) devices, against the target and mimicking it as normal Flash Events (FEs) to prevent detection. Many researchers have found the unique characteristics of DDoS attacks only to detect and mitigate them. However, it is crucial to highlight the features that segregate DDoS attacks and FEs. In this study, we first conducted an extensive literature survey, found the characteristics distinguishing DDoS attacks and FEs and mentioned the proposed metrics. Genuine traces have been used to evaluate and validate the characteristics of both. The thorough analysis and results mention various technical differences that can be used to differentiate both DdoS and Flash Events.
