Abstract ISO and IEC have jointly initiated, and recently issued, a series of standards (the ISO/IEC 21838 series) for top-level ontologies. These standards have been used by industrial consortia to develop and disseminate standards for mid-level ontologies to ease the development of ontologies in specific domains and applications. This paper traces the motivation for these concerted efforts to the successful application of ontologies in biological sciences. It then analyzes these recently released international standards for top-level and mid-level ontologies, and shows how they can be used for domain-level and application-level ontologies. Finally, it provides a rationale for applying these standards to the important and emerging field of biomanufacturing.
