Jens Hälterlein · Edward Elgar Publishing eBooks · 2023

Recent innovations in the AI subfield of machine learning (ML) have made AI a matter of concern for politicians, agencies and practitioners in the security sector. They envision AI as a crucial factor for the future security of societies. The first part of the chapter outlines the new security culture and the importance of technological fixes that provide the backdrop for the contemporary importance of AI-based security. The second part addresses the specific promises and expectations that are associated with this technology, namely the automatic analysis of mass data and the data-driven production of predictions of critical events. The third part discusses several critical issues including the push for mass surveillance, the reproduction of discriminatory practices and the problems with providing accountability through a human in the loop.
