The ongoing increase in urbanization has required the social, ecological, and monetary advancement of urban areas in order to fundamentally upgrade living conditions. The Internet of Things (IoT), information and communication tools, and different advancements have been synchronized to determine the difficulties faced in smart cities. The key objective is to make the most adequate utilization of accessible assets and innovations to foster quality of life, which include support and efficiency in different fields such as healthcare, agriculture, communication, transport, and smart grid. The integration of emerging and evolving technologies can prove to be an important asset in dealing with the security issues that are prevalent in smart cities. For example, an IoT-enabled application can play a vital part here; however, it also presents different security, protection, dormancy, and dependability issues. To address these challenges, another evolving technology, i.e., blockchain integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), can be employed to efficiently deal with the aforementioned data security and protection issues and can offer excellent assistance due to various services available, which include immutability, trust-free, and decentralization, among other features. In this work, a thorough review of AI–ML blockchain solutions for IoT communication is presented along with examination of the challenges observed and identified with blockchain use in the sixth-generation (6G) technology. Potential directions for surpassing these difficulties are mapped out.
