SECURITY AND PRIVACY PROTECTION IN BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION

International Research Journal of Modernization in Engineering Technology and Science · 2023

A rising trend in ensuring validity is introducing the use of such biometrics as the human voice, fingerprints, and iris scanning.Biometric authentication is a safe and easy-to-use technology that is widely used in various fields for the identification and authentication issues of an individual. In this survey, we classify and thoroughly review existing biometric authentication systems, mainly focusing on security and privacy issues. We analyze the threats of biometric identification and propose a number of criteria for secure and privacy-preserving authentication. In particular, we discuss the problems of aliveness detection and privacy protection based on the proposed criteria. We also point to open issues and suggest future research directions. There is a new technology called Biometric authentication which is being used by people to identify users. This technology is being used by individuals such as in mobile phones, access controls to buildings, and financial services among others. This article looks into the ethics, legality, and technology aspects related to the gathering and storage of data, emphasizing strong encryptions, obtaining permission, and time limits.Although biometrics provide convenience and safety, the issue of respect for citizens' private data is still pressing enough. There has been a lot of research on biometric authentication systems, particularly for mobile devices.Nevertheless, various inherent flaws remain in the current biometric authentication systems. This is the case for some biological features that have not been investigated to a considerable depth. The benefits-privacy trade-off in the usage of biometrics has been studied extensively in this paper.
