Structuring data, part 2
Hans van der Heijden · 2009
Abstract In the previous chapter we discussed the fundamentals of structuring data. In this chapter we will be building on this material and discuss an important alternative to ER diagrams, UML class diagrams. The Unified Modeling Language or UML is a diagramming language that, among other things, recasts entities into classes. The fundamental notions of entities and classes are very similar, but the terminology is slightly different. I will discuss the UML concepts in a bit more detail in this chapter, because you will frequently encounter class diagrams instead of ER diagrams.
