Abstract In experimental philosophy we are able to look upon propositions obtained by general induction from phenomena as accurately or very nearly true ... till such time as other phenomena occur, by which time they may be accurate or liable to exceptions. The principles of general induction upon which Newton formulated the celestial mechanical equations of motion began the interpretation of dynamics in terms of mathematics. This early development spawned infinitesimal mathematics or calculus. A complete understanding of the solutions of these equations of motion, however, has remained out of reach.
