Continuum Theory Of Crystalline Solids

Kaushik Bhattacharya · 2003

Abstract In this chapter, we develop a continuum theory of crystalline solids. We begin with a review of lattices and the symmetry of lattices. A reader who finds this review insufficient is referred to introductory books on solid state physics like that by Ashcroft and Mermin (1976). We then link the lattice to the continuum using the Cauchy–Born hypothesis and describe the consequences of this linkage on the resulting continuum theory. This presentation draws heavily from the ideas of Ericksen (1978; 1979; 1980; 1984) and the work of Pitteri and Zanzotto (1984; 1985; 2003).
