Abstract Fontenrose showed at considerable length, without comparing the two names linguistically, that the Python and Typhon myths largely coincide, and must be at the outset developments of a single ‘earlier form of the Greek dragon myth in which Typhon and Python were not distinguished’ (1980:193).
