Counterfactuals and the Second Law

Abstract I will be discussing a kind of conditional (or counterfactual) typically expressed in English by subjunctive conditionals. Here are some examples: ‘if I were to strike this match there would be an exp1osion’, ‘if there had been an explosion it is likely that I would have heard it’, ‘if the explosion had not occurred then the window would not have broken’.
