Situating the corpus

Abstract Initially at least, CAR is readily recognizable as a register in the sense that the frequency of function words or the reliance on abbreviations tends to correlate with specific functional parameters. These include the presentation of narrowly focused information in texts produced under largely uniform spatial constraints and normally benefiting from ample planning time. CAR also qualifies as a simple register in that it typically falls short-sometimes dramatically so of the degree of elaboration usually associated with written language.
