Functional variation

Paul Bruthiaux · 1996

Abstract So far I have shown that despite the presence of pre-patterned and prefabricated segments, what characterizes CAR texts above all other features is their minimal degree of syntactic elaboration. As a result, the notion of obligatory context cannot be applied to the measurement of syntactic elaboration in this register because attempts to identify missing features often amount to little more than guesswork. I also noted that the degree of syntactic elaboration appears to vary systematically across ad categories.
