Under the Ear and Far Away

Abstract We have to learn to play, but we must also learn to listen, and there are odd beliefs about listening, apart from those about ‘tone’. Experienced players may judge an instrument almost entirely by exploring its responsiveness to bowing, but they usually ask for the opinion of listeners and often like to listen while others play it. Performers believe that some instruments ‘project’ better than others, meaning that some can be heard well in an auditorium, and there are also explanations for some odd ideas that audiences have about hearing solo instruments.
