Abstract The concept of hypothetical ideal fluid is related to an inviscid, irrotational and potential flow. The potential theory predicts zero resistance exerted on a body submerged in ideal fluid. This is known asd’Alembert’s paradox. It is in obvious disagreement with observation because large forces are exerted on bluff bodies even in fluids of a very small viscosity.
