Abstract A brief guide to the statistical and mathematical facilities in Genstat is given in the Preface. This chapter describes the basic rules, terminology, and conventions of the Genstat syntax; you can think of these as the grammatical rules of the Genstat language. Later chapters will then describe the vocabulary required for all the operations that Genstat can perform. Section 1.1 illustrates some of the concepts using a simple example, while the later sections contain the rigorous definitions.
