Abstract The problem of inferring and predicting a population time trend from repeated measurements on individuals from the population is considered. Different modelling strategies incorporating the dynamic hierarchical approach are proposed. These include the use of mixtures to combine information at individual and population levels. Applications are presented and specific topics such as prediction, different follow-up intervals and design considerations are discussed.
