Bayesian Model Choice: What and Why?

Abstract Bayesian approaches to model choice are reviewed from an historical perspective and then discussed in terms of possible desiderata and principles. Particular focus is given to issues of conformity with a decision-theoretic formulation and to the issue of model choice when none of the available models is regarded as true.
