Exotic Magic Squares

Abstract Because a magic square requires that the rows, columns, and diagonals yield the magic constant, there would inevitably spring up some contrary-minded joker who would devise a square in which all these lines yield different sums. One such mind twister was puzzle master Sam Lloyd, who dreamed up a square like this in the nineteenth century. These squares are given the name heterosquares, and one is shown in Figure 8.1 (Heinz and Hendricks [22]).
